Blue Gender

I watched this a few days ago on Hulu, I had started it... I think last year but never finished it cause I was side tracked.

Blue Gender is about Yuji Kaido, a guy that had been cryogenically frozen for a long time due to a untreatable illness that they hoped to cure in the future when they thawed him out. Yuji is awaken early only to learn that giant insects have invaded earth and are trying to wipe out every last trace of mankind. Marlene Angel, one member of a recovery squad, and the person whom has woken Yuji from his slumber must now escort him to "Second Earth", a giant space ship that everyone has evacuated to.

This show is apparently overlooked because of the "cliche post apocalyptic save the world theme" (which i happen to sort of like anyways), But It's not just that.. This show isn't all that bad if you give it a chance, The first time I started watching this I had been playing Front Mission on a SNES rom and was really trying to find a show that sort of had the same atmosphere, this came closest. So far this is really sounding biased, I know.. so I'll cut to the main part. If you watch the dub of this don't be turned off by the voice of that crazy guy at the beginning, you honestly don't see much of him and the rest of the voices are just fine. I'm pretty sure you aren't going to like Yuji starting out because at the very beginning he is a complete wuss, wait awhile and he'll start to change and will grow on you.

I think the only thing I really hated about Blue Gender was near the end of the series it seems a little awkward, maybe it's just me, and the ending didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, I understand part of it but the other part I'm still kind of lost on... The music on this one is really nice (I probably say that too much, but It really is), I especially liked the opening song in either language, the dub sort of sounds a little heavier but they're both good. I really liked the "Blue" which are those giant insects I mentioned that were taking over the earth, most of them have a interesting design, and they're near invincible if it wasn't for their "Core", the weak spot that looks like this fleshy artery or something.

The storyline is pretty good, some people have complained about there being gaping plot holes, but I honestly can't think of one, the art is really nice too I just wish Yuji didn't have such a weird haircut, honestly it makes him look odd... I think it's the sideburns mostly. People have compared this to Starship Troopers But, There's more to the show than the damn giant bugs and marines. There are some emotional moments, but They don't always go through with a great effect and this is also a flaw because you don't really get enough time to get attached to new characters as they usually only last a few episodes, there are a select few that you get a chance to grow attached to, but not a whole lot.

Well since I'm out of stuff to say, I decided on an 8, it isn't a spectacular show but it's still fairly enjoyable, if was being picky I might have gave it a 7, but eh..

8/10
